Dharamsala airport which is actually called Gaggal airport which is also known as Kangra airport is an airport in Gaggal (Near Kangra), about 14 km from Dharamsala.
Dharamsala itself is very pretty but the airport is a sight to behold. We reached here in the morning around 10am for a 12 noon flight and waited inside for the staff to start trickling in. Like a sleepy old town, things move at a very slow pace here. No one is in a rush. The staff likes to chit-chat with travelers while checking them in. As you stand waiting for the luggage screening, they smile and ask you about your holiday.
And once you are done with all the security checks, you enter a waiting area with a view of lush green garden and hills playing peek-a-boo through the clouds.
While we stood admiring the view, we saw a plane land. It was the ATR we were booked on.
Once the ATR was parked, we were asked to walk up to the plane to board it. Yea.. no bus or aerobridge here. 🙂
This is what I needed to end a fantastic trip on a good note. Walking up to a plane like it was my private jet – Like a boss!
Once everyone including the crew was on board, I looked outside the window and saw that the entire airport staff that comprised of about 15 people in total, waiting outside for us to take off. It was like they were seeing us off. I regret not taking their pic but as I write this, I can visualize them waving us goodbye.
If you are planning to visit Dharamsala, I recommend that you do consider flying in our out via this airport. It’s a truly unique flying experience.
Have you been to Dharamsala airport or any other similar airport? I look forward to hearing your stories.
